EMBRACE SUSTAINABLE!
Invite consciousness to your wardrobe. Where do your clothes come from? Who made them? How do you engage in the clothing cycle?
I invite you to design a sustainable future for your wardrobe. It’s not as difficult as it sounds. Eco Fashion, or Sustainable Fashion, is an environmentally and human-rights conscious movement that gives an alternative to Fast Fashion. In the fashion world, we all know how quickly trends come and go, but it’s time for change in the way that the industry is run. Change is slow in an industry that brings in millions every year, and it is easy to ignore the human and environmental consequences of mass production and cheap labour from the comfort of our stores. Maybe it seems too daunting task, perhaps you believe you are powerless, but believe me, you can do something about it, because everything starts with you.
YOU are the customer.
You can choose to wear what you want to.
As a fashion student, I am surrounded by people who think creatively about their clothes. Most of us source at least part of our wardrobe outside the mass-produced industry: Second-hand stores, hand made, re-purposed re-invented and re-gifted pieces. I interviewed five students for this article; each had a style that was unique, fresh, and they constructed stunning ensembles with pieces of garments bought from high street retailers. I even had a classmate back in England who only wore second hand, preloved or gifted clothing. If you’re really digging the DIY, it’s easy to mend and repair clothing. While you’re at it, you can add details such as patches or rives. Details make all the difference.
We still have much to learn when it comes to creating sensible, sustainable and creative wardrobes, but it is possible to live this way.
You can do it, all it takes is a choice!
